The Rotary Club of Guernsey has taken part in the District
Young Chef competition. Due to covid this has not been able to be held
since 2019.
It took place at The College of Further Education catering department on the 15th of February.
There were 10 original participants, but illness reduced the number to eight, who came from a variety of secondary schools.
All
eight produced excellent food, with a variety of menus. The total
amount each young chef could spend on ingredients was £22.00.
The Co-op kindly provided food vouchers for every contestant.
The
winner was James Robinson, aged 15, whose starter was a Spinach
Gazpacho, followed by Atlantic Cod with crumb coating, and a caper sauce
with asparagus and baby carrots and parsnips. James' dessert was a home made ice cream, dressed with a cherry sauce.
Judges were two members of the Guernsey Hospitality Association and the College Tutor.
James went on to represent Guernsey in the district heat on the 11th of March, where he came fourth in a very competitive field.
We thank the Co-op Society and the Guernsey Hospitality Association for their great support.
But without The College of Further Education, the catering tutor and his staff, we would not have been able to participate.
The
Rotary Club gives thanks to all who made this possible, but most
importantly the young chefs who entered and made the whole experience so
worth while.
