Government House Planting 25,000 Purple Crocus Corms (24 October 2017)

On World Polio Day today (Tuesday 24th October) His Excellency Sir Ian and Lady Corder assisted volunteers from Rotary, Floral Guernsey, Appleby (Guernsey) LLP and other supporters of Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ project to plant 25,000 purple crocus corms in the grounds of Government House. 

Rotary is grateful to Appleby (Guernsey) LLP for their sponsorship of this and other Polio related projects undertaken by the Club. 

Mike Le Conte, representing Rotary at the planting said, “The Lieutenant-Governor’s endorsement of our Purple Crocus campaign is very much appreciated.  In this way we seek to draw the public’s attention to the fantastic work being done by Rotary Clubs internationally and others to eradicate this terrible disease from the World.”

Bailiwick Rotary Clubs very much lead the way on this initiative. Following our example, Rotary Clubs from around the nation will be working together with the RHS in similar planting projects. It is estimated that no less than 5 million Crocus Corms will be planted by Rotary across Great Britain and Ireland to add to the 7 million planted last year. Indeed Guernsey will be represented by local Rotarians Jannine and Paul Birtwhistle at a major planting project being undertaken at The Olympic Park in London simultaneously with today’s planting at Government House.
