GUERNSEY "YOUTH SPEAKS" TEAM MAKE THE NATIONAL FINALS
Our students from Guernsey Grammar School were rewarded with success on 5th April as they progress through Rotary's National Youth Speaks Competition. Our team comprising Chair, Helena de Carteret, main speaker, Douglas Craig and, proposer of thanks, Jordan Linton travelled to Exeter to compete with other District winners within the Region.
Understandably, the standard of competition was very high at this third round of the competition. That said the talent and depth of preparation of our team shone through. Their winning presentation, entitled "Down the rabbit hole", sought to challenge the limitations of a narrowly framed curriculum based education system.
The chairman of the judging panel commented that "the intellectual construction of their presentation, the passion which they showed for their subject matter and a faultless team performance" distinguished the Guernsey presentation.
The Guernsey Qualifying Heat and the winning team's subsequent path through the subsequent heats are sponsored by local advocates, Mourant Ozannes.
.
Simon Milsted, this year's chairman of Rotary' Youth Opportunities Committee said "Our partnership with Mourant Ozannes in promoting this competition has been longstanding. We jointly embrace this as a means of encouraging the Island's young people to develop a skill that will serve them in their future life, whatever that may entail.
"Furthermore we hope that in years such as this when we achieve such incredible success we will inspire younger students to embrace and develop public speaking skills and, naturally, take part in our future competitions. It is also very satisfying to be involved in an initiative that proves that talent can be found amongst the Island's Youth which compares so favorably with the very best in the UK."
