GUERNSEY ROTARY YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR COMPETITION 2013
The 2013 Guernsey Rotary Young Chef of The Year competition was another resounding success this year. With a slightly reduced number of young chefs this year due to the unfortunate loss of the two Alderney finalists, who could not travel due to bad weather, the competition went ahead and achieved the usual high standard.
Steve Scuffell the head judge, was once again impressed by the very high standard of our young chefs, stating "the standard of the food was worthy of any top restaurant". He was joined by two other judges, Richard Harding from Island FM and Charlotte Jones from Environmental Heath.
The eventual winner of the Mike Burbridge trophy Julia Quevatre who will go on to represent the island in the District final in February presented a very tasty menu comprising, Thai chilli prawns on a bed of rocket, a main course of chicken stuffed with brie and asparagus wrapped in Parma ham served with Mediterranean vegetables and a double chocolate cheesecake dessert.
In a very tight competition the runner up was Gretel Cahill, who received a replica cut glass.
Other winners on the day were:
Tastiest dish (donated by GASP)
Best use of local ingredients (donated by the Co-op)
Kitchen craft (donated by Craft Guild of Chefs uk)
Health & Hygiene trophy (donated by Wineandine)
As usual of course the competition could not have taken place without the generous support of our sponsors. For this event we have three:
Our main sponsor the Channel Islands Co-operative Society
Industrial and Leisure Clothing who provide chefs clothes for all finalists
Aurigny Airlines who provide all travel costs for our Alderney finalists
In addition the thanks of the club go to Steve Bacon, Julie Hyde and the staff of the College of Further Education, without whose guidance and help we simply would not have a final.
We all wish Julia well in the District final.
