A GUIDED WALK AROUND THE CIDER FIELDS
This must be one of Guernsey's best kept secrets? Although all of us on the tour were well aware of Rocquettes Cider and I think most of us had tasted it, we were in no way prepared for the scale of the orchard where all the apples come from. Guernsey is a small place and to be shown an area of land to this scale, planted out with apple trees, which are virtually invisible from the road, was amazing.
Our tour guide was Gill Girard, a professional tour guide within the island and fortunately for us wife of Rotarian Jerry Girard (ex club President), so we were able to secure her very professional services at a time of the evening when I am sure she would normally be at home?
We were treated to a full history of cider making in Guernsey while wandering around these gorgeous orchards, on what must have been one of the best nights of the year for weather. We also received an explanation of how the trees were planted, cared for and harvested and after a walk back to the main house a detailed talk on the process by the owner of the site.
You can imagine how thirsty we all were by then, so of course we were forced into trying the cider!
The whole evening ended with a meal at the Pavilion Restaurant and a raffle held to support an initiative dear to our President Paul Steele's heart which was the rebuilding of a scout HQ in the UK which had unfortunately been burned down. Thank you and well done to our Sport & Social committee.
