West Coast Wander (August 2026)

A visit to two rarely opened bunkers restored by Festung Guernsey.

Led by Inner Wheel member Gill Girard (our very own Gold Accredited Guernsey Guide) we set off on our tour of the Fort Hommet Headland.

We visited two rarely opened bunkers restored by Festung Guernsey.  First of all a M19 automatic mortar bunker. It was fascinating to see the turret room, high up inside with little room to spare and a seat alongside it. Possibly the only place worldwide where you can see an original M19 in a bunker.

Then a short walk to a Personnel Bunker. A bomb proof shelter for the Germans with interesting murals on the walls including a photo of a long-ago girlfriend. Both bunkers had escape routes - not for the faint-hearted!
