Friendship and Fellowship with the Rotary Club of Alderney
Unfortunately the weather intervened with boats and planes cancelled so that only 6 made it to Alderney for Lunch at Griffs Restaurant followed by Dinner at Nellie Grays on the Friday.
On Saturday numbers improved but 8 still couldn’t make it over. Those that did enjoyed a guided island tour provided by Alderney Rotarians in the morning. In the afternoon we climbed aboard the Alderney Wildlife Trust’s “Sula of Braye” to see the gannet and puffin colonies with an excellent commentary. In the evening it was time for the weekends highlight, a Caribbean Gala Evening at the Braye Beach Hotel. A superbly organised celebration, magnificently hosted and organised by Vaughan Davies, President Rotary Club of Alderney.
On Sunday morning there was an exclusive train journey to Mannez Quarry with a welcome to Alderney by Steve Roberts, Vice President of the States of Alderney, and fizz, yummy cookies and entertainment by the Accafellas.
Carla noted that 'Despite unfortunate air and sea cancellations at the beginning of the weekend resulting in several of our party being unable to make it to Alderney 16 Rotarians and partners represented the Rotary Club of Guernsey. The sun came out on the Saturday morning and we were very well looked after by the Rotary Club of Alderney and their supporters, with a full range of activities and events, meticulously organised. The whole weekend was so much fun and in the true spirit of Rotary fellowship.
Memorable moments included the wildlife boat cruises with gannets, puffins and dolphins a plenty, the train journey with vin d’honneur and welcome by the States of Alderney and the delightful singing by the Accafellas and Womble viewing! And then the grand dinner event - the tropical Caribbean Gala evening with Rum Punch cocktails on the sunset terrace. Congratulations to our Rotarian Dave Parish who won the best dressed man completion, Val Campbell who won the best dressed lady competition, and to Kathy wife of our Rotarian Geoff who came a very close second in the Limbo competition.
Our huge thanks to Vaughan, President of the Rotary Club of Alderney and his team, and to our Rotarians Chris Roberts and Dave Parish, who organised and coordinated all the arrangements from the Guernsey end. Thank you. A great weekend’.
Reflecting on the weekend Vaughan Davies President of the Alderney Club said "it was duly fitting that the get together coincided with Rotarys Friendship and fellowship month. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our beautiful island to our Guernsey visitors. It was truly trains, boats and planes as highlights included an island tour arranged by local club members, an exhilarating boat trip showcasing our wildlife, Elizabeth the train where at Mannez quarry they were greeted to a performance by the Accafellas. Both clubs celebrated the weekend at a Caribbean themed gala dinner."
