Join us for lunch before welcoming our guest speaker, James Falla, Editor of the Guernsey Press, the island’s newspaper of record, which has been reporting the news since 31 July 1897.
There are some fascinating Rotary connections to the newspaper’s history. The Rotary Club of Guernsey’s first President, Gervaise Footit Peek, was himself an editor of the Guernsey Press. The paper’s sister publication, The Star—acquired by the Guernsey Press in 1951—was edited by Frank Falla, one of Guernsey’s most remarkable wartime figures. Frank played a leading role in the island’s Resistance movement and was instrumental in producing the clandestine Guernsey Underground News Sheet during the Occupation.
More recently, in October 2019, ownership of the Guernsey Press transferred to The Channel Islands Media Group Limited, a locally owned investment company, ensuring the newspaper remained in local hands.
James will share his insights into the challenges and opportunities facing local journalism and the media today, and tis happy to take questions on the Guernsey Press and the local media.
