Sainsbury's & Portishead Rotary Partnership

Sainsbury’s, Portishead have announced 150 days of volunteering in the community in partnership with the Rotary Club of Portishead.

This exciting news is an initiative which supports the supermarket’s 150th birthday celebrations and will includes 150 days of volunteering across the country that continues the company’s history of putting local communities first.

Portishead Rotary Club are delighted to have been chosen to be the local partner in their birthday celebrations and were asked to nominate three worthy causes who they support.  This they did and the result was that all three initiatives were given the go-ahead by the teams from the store.  So, the partnership adventure begins.  What were the three initiatives ?  In no particular order they were;

  • The Lighthouse Dementia Carers Group which provides the opportunity for the carers of those living with dementia to meet over light refreshments and relax in conversation with each other.  It offers respite and comfort for them.  They meet every fourth Tuesday of the month from 10.30 – 12.30, at St. Nicholas Church, Nore Road, Portishead.
  • The Stroke Drop in Centre which takes place at Clarence House, High Street, Portishead on the first Friday of each month from 1030 – 1230.  There is open interactive discussion where advice, support and signposting is given over, of course, light refreshments!  The contact details are available of those agencies who can offer further advice and guidance for those who have suffered a stroke or for their carers.  The Centre has been in operation for over six years and is run by Stroke survivors for Stroke Survivors – and their carers.  Again, there is no charge and if anyone would like to find out more please contact lorrainerowsell@btinternet.com.
  • And finally our own  Memory Café which is held on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 14.15 – 15.45, at the Jubilee Hall, Slade Road, Portishead.  Here, those with dementia and their carers sit together and enjoy light refreshments followed by a variety of interactive games including higher and lower, bingo, matching birthdays with the stars, housey housey and a hearty sing-a-long.  There is no charge.

Sainsbury’s, Portishead store manager Robin Ireland said ‘We’re really excited to be working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Portishead and helping local causes so close to our hearts – it’s a great way for our staff to come together and support the community.  It’s so important to give back to our local community and what better time than in our 150th year’.  John Sleight, the Rotary Club’s immediate past president said ‘we are so delighted and proud to have been chosen as a key partner in the 150 year celebrations.  Together we can further our community work both here and abroad improving standards of living and quality of life’.
