A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. It is a medical emergency and the leading cause of adult disability in the UK. They can affect people of any age but are more common in older people. According to the Stroke Association every year around 400 children in the UK will have a stroke. They offer advice how you can significantly reduce your risk of having a stroke by leading a healthy lifestyle, eating a healthy diet, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol in moderation and not smoking.
The Portishead Stroke Drop in Centre has been in operation for over 5 years and is run by Stroke survivors for Stroke survivors – and their carers. They meet at Clarence House on Portishead High Street on the first Friday of each month from 1030 – 1230. Here there is open discussion offering advice and support over a cup of tea as well as providing contact details of agencies who can offer further guidance.
Portishead Rotary Club has adopted the Stroke Drop in Centre as one of their Charities of the Year and invited them along to a Club meeting on Tuesday 28th November to present them with a cheque for £200 to help them in their valuable work.
Rotary President John Sleight seen here presenting the cheque to Lori Rowsell from the Centre said ‘having seen the work that they do and the appreciation shown by those at the Drop in Centre it was an easy decision to support them’. Lori said ‘the funding support is so appreciated and will really help us to enhance the support that we provide to those who have suffered strokes and for their carers’.
