Youth Speaks Sensation

Hereford Sixth Form students showcase their debating skills

It's been a year since our last 'Youth Speaks' debate and the club couldn't wait to see what the amazing students from Hereford Sixth Form College had in store for us this time.

Two teams from Hereford Sixth Form College competed admirably in the senior category for our Rotary 'Youth Speaks' presentation shield. We were very pleased also to welcome two Community Members of the Club Phil Tranter and Marco Martinelli from the College who witnessed the sterling performance of their students.

The team comprising Dylan, Izzy and Jago treated us to: 'this house believes that liberal democracy is on a path to failure.' The team comprising Tara, Theo and JJ presented: 'this house supports the rise of political nihilism as a form of protest during times of severe government turmoil.'

Both teams were incredible, their public speaking skills outstanding and they left our members with lots to think about. Our judges made a difficult decision - given the high quality of debate from both teams - in awarding the shield to the latter team.

The winning team will have the opportunity to compete again in the District Final of 'Youth Speaks' at Churchdown in Gloucester on 8 February 2025. So we wish them good luck in the next stages of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition.

Thanks to our judges Ruth, Pauline and Phil and to our timekeeper Anne for their efforts in running another successful event.'
