This Wednesday was Richard Purdon’s 17th club visit as part of his tour of the district since he became District Governor. An accomplished speaker, Richard commenced with a brief history of his Rotary background which has been very active since he joined in 2003 in Sid Valley and moving to Cheltenham North in 2007.
Richard described his experiences at the recent RI conference and gave including various facts about Rotary clubs elsewhere, and their activities compare to the UK. He updated us on the progress of the End-polio initiative and what other goals may be followed, malaria for example. The UK is unusual in having a steadily declining membership and Richard urged us to consider ways to recruit new members and to find ways of maintaining the success of our fund raising events.
Richard reminded us that Rotary is essentially a community service organisation and importantly that all of our activities should be fun for our members as well as making a difference in the community.
The forthcoming conference will be in Torquay and Richard outlined the programme, emphasising that it will be an enjoyable fun event as well as being informative and stimulating.
We were invited to submit questions and Richard answered our various queries during his talk, which included his reasons for becoming the DG – a desire to make a greater contribution, and his main aims for the year – to improve Foundation activities, to increase awareness of community work and to make the forthcoming conference in Torquay a successful event.
Overall, Richard’s enthusiastic talk gave the club an entertaining and informative evening.
