Fish and Chip night (Visit to Simpsons, Cheltenham)

Adrian Smith organised an unusual outside list to the award winning Fish and Chip shop, which is Simpsons Fish and Chips in Cheltenham.

Whilst it was a poor turnout from club members, the attendees were treated to a classy plate of Fish and Chips, with ice cream to follow and wine to wash it down.

Simpsons is an award winning Fish and Chip Restaurant (winner of the 2016 UK Fish and Chip Restaurant of the year). We were joined by Jan Simpson, the owner, who at the end of the meal, gave us an insight into her lifelong passion to raise the standards and profile of the Fish industry.

All her raw products are purchased from sustainable sources (cod from the Bering sea, salmon from Scotland and potatoes from the one source that produces the right quality chip). The fish is frozen at sea to maintain freshness, within 4 hours. She told us that the restaurant side is about 1/3 of the business, the remainder being the ‘takeaway’ side, of which most of us are familiar with (when we are allowed to by the ladies!). Thankfully, due to the use of groundnut oil and careful sourcing and preparation, the product is actually very healthy in terms of fat content!

Jan started in Stonehouse and almost retired, until was lured back into the business by her daughter and son in law, who between them have built the business up to its award winning status.

Brexit is bringing its effects to the humble fish and chip, with commodity prices affecting fish purchases, but thankfully the price of potatoes has dropped to compensate, although this only a seasonal variation.

There was some temporary agro from John Cresswell when he thought the Secretary had pinched his ice cream order, but it turn out to be a false alarm!
