In my view, amongst the best and most memorable of our club meetings are those to which we welcome ‘one of our own’ as guest speaker – to provide us with an insight into his personal and business background and in particular his life achievements.
Roger Head, honorary member of our club and High Sheriff of Gloucestershire, kindly sacrificed some of his very limited quality time to be our guest speaker this evening, and as those who were present to hear him will recognise, this short report cannot even begin to give full justice for all the good Roger has done for, and brought to, the less fortunate citizens of Gloucester.
Roger, a proud Gloucester born and bred man, shared with us an insight to his modest start in life emerging from Gloucester Technical College to at first take-up a motor mechanical apprenticeship but, unable to resist his entrepreneurial instincts, in due course moving-on to start his own business involving the inter-trade sale and purchase of specialist vehicles.
That business was just the beginning of what was to become, for Roger, a very successful and diversified business career, now spanning upwards of 40 years, and during that time to muster the financial strength with which to indulge his passion – namely the purchase and restoration of Highnam Court and its extensive garden and grounds, which was no small challenge.
Overcoming challenges, as Roger has so capably demonstrated himself able to do, has resulted in Highnam Court being restored to its former glory. That, in no small measure, has involved Roger himself having to roll-up his sleeves and getting stuck-in. Now an attraction drawing thousands of visitors each year, it is a venue of which Roger generously allows regular use for events raising a great deal of money benefitting charitable causes.
Surprisingly, but admirably, Roger has been able to find (or to have made) the time to volunteer his active participation in many charitable causes and community projects, not the least of which are (but are not limited to) Cloud nine (which club supported with a £3,000 donation earlier this year); Pied Piper; Three Counties Agricultural Society.
Little wonder, and certainly very deserving, that Roger in recognition of all the good he has done for, and brought to, Gloucester and its less fortunate citizens, that he should have been nominated for, and successful achieving, appointment as High Sheriff.
