Caitlin Santacroce - RYLA Candidate

Caitlin was this club’s 2015 RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) candidate. She came along to give her views and comments on the experience.

The ‘award’ is essentially an award by the sponsoring club to attend a RYLA course. These last for six days and five nights in this district and are held in the Forest of Dean. Typically about 40 young people (aged between 16 and 18) attend, sponsored by different clubs within the district. The course helps candidates to develop their leadership skills and team working.

Caitlin admitted that she had initially been somewhat anxious about meeting up with complete strangers but acknowledged that they had quickly been formed into teams and allocated tasks.

She acknowledged too, that the tasks for the teams had been challenging, not just for the teams, but also for the individuals. She gave the example of having to climb up a ropeway, to a height that seemed very daunting. Conversely, she was able to pass on some of her own skills, for example assisting a team-mate on an occasion when they were canoeing.

The final event for the teams was to go into Monmouth and raise a sum of money and also find someone who was celebrating a birthday that day. This made them work as a team and also be confident in approaching members of the public.

Caitlin came across with the impression that she had been a very good choice of candidate for this course. She spoke confidently, with some pictures but no notes, to illustrate her experiences there. She agreed that the event had been a good, positive experience and she had come away from it with some very good skills and increased confidence in leadership and team working.

We should have no doubt that our annual sponsorship of candidates is very beneficial for them.
