The last time the Club visited the museum it was at least 15 years ago. 15 years ago the exhibitions and content of the museum would probably considered boring. What a contrast to the current exhibition!

Upon passing through the shop and entering the museum proper we were first treated to a talk by a very real life size dummy (at first I thought it was our President play acting). The exhibits were very well presented with readable well informed descriptions for each exhibit with the whole museum providing a historic story of the Glosters.

The regiment was first established in the year 1694. Regiments in those days were the personal property of their Colonels. A Col John Gibson starting this regiment which eventually became known as the 28^th Foot Regiment. In 1756 at the outbreak of the 7-year war with France, the army was enlarged with the formation of the 61^st Regiment of Foot. The 28^th and the 61^st Regiments being the direct forerunners of the current Gloucestershire Regiment.

What was amazing is that over the last 300+ years there has been hardly any period of time that the Glosters have not been active, having been involved in the following campaigns;

Canada, Spain, France, back to Canada, The West Indies, America, Egypt, Waterloo, India, Crimea, South Africa, First World War fighting in Mons, Gallipoli and Ypres, Korea, Bosnia and latterly Afghanistan just to name a few.

The Club could not fail to be impressed by the fact that some of the battles the Glosters were involved in changed the shape of the world to as we know it today. For example the year 1757 the Glosters joined General Wolfe in confronting the French at Quebec. The French advanced upon the Gloster who held the centre of the British lines, when the enemy was within 35 paces the Glosters opened fired. The French were devastated by the volley and so they turned and ran, hence Canada became British.

The Glosters have the unique distinction of wearing a badge at the back of their head-dress as well as the front. This came about when fighting Napoleon
