We Listened to Our Youngsters – They Had So Much to Say!
On Wednesday 5th July, Cirencester Rotary Club was once again very pleased to sponsor this year's Schools Public Speaking Showcase Event at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU), designed to develop the public speaking skills and self-confidence of our young people.
Kingshill, Deer Park and Farmor’s Schools each participated. Students from Years 8, 9, and 10 were selected to represent their school. The standard of presentation was exceptional and the audience of Rotary Members, along with family, friends and teachers, were very impressed by the diverse content, quality and confidence of all the speakers involved.
The speeches being showcased were on subjects extremely broad and varied:
· Kingshill School: Year 8 “Japanese Food” by Lily Dickenson; Year 9 “Ofsted” by Isabella Stickney, and “Women in Sport” by Freya Blamely; Year 10 “The Ageing Population” by Lily Aldridge.
· Deer Park School: Year 8 “Gender Equality in School Sport” by Molly Bell; Year 10 “The Benefits of Swimming” by Daniel Parker-Owen.
· Farmor’s School: Year 8 “Why Homework Should Be Abolished” by Abbie Vandamme; Year 9 “The Dangers of Value Locking” by Dan Smith; Year 10 “Perfection in the Education System” by Hannah Thomas.
Local Rotarian Chris Rowbotham said, “This annual event is a great opportunity to help develop the verbal presentation skills of so many of our young people. Our warmest congratulations go to all the participants."
Certificates of Participation and Prizes were presented by Cirencester Rotary Club President Chris Tovey. He said, “Their confidence and inventiveness in preparing and delivering their speeches was a credit to them as individuals and to their schools. Our Club is very proud to support this annual event that helps so many young people develop their self-confidence and communication skills through the experience of public speaking.”
In addition to the individual prizes, the Club annually awards the Fred Perkin Cup for the most ‘ear and eye catching’ speech, and this year it went to Isabella Stickney from Kingshill School for her speech entitled “Ofsted”. As Chris Rowbotham explained, “It was a very close-run thing with so many excellent presentations to choose from; but Isabella’s subject and audience-engaging delivery were particularly memorable and she thoroughly deserved this award.”
