THE SUCCESS OF ‘ACTIVIUS’ our first community active family fun day

The first community active family fun day event, ‘Activius’ held by the Rotary Club of Cirencester on Saturday at Cirencester Kingshill School was considered a success. Following years of planning, two postponements due to Covid and the sudden passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the difficult decision was made to go ahead with the event as planned and hold a two minute silence in her honour at 1pm.

With over 20 local sports clubs and fitness providers in attendance, each gave demonstrations and opportunities to participate for free, including Archery, Army Logistics, Athletics, Boxing, Cheerleading, Community Fitness, Cricket, Dance, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Judo, Martial Arts, Rugby, Tennis and an inflatable Bungee Run, Climbing Wall and Boot Camp Challenge!

The event was the brainchild of Cirencester Rotarian Philip Reynolds and carefully co-ordinated by Cirencester Rotarian Alan Rice-Smith. “We are grateful for the kind support of so many local clubs and fitness providers and it was great to see hundreds of happy people at our event being active! This has proved to be a good recipe which went down well with the local community and we have received lots of very positive feedback, with many families previously unaware of the variety of sports activities available in and around Cirencester. We are now hoping to host this fun, free event on an annual basis and encourage a healthier community”, said Reynolds.

This free community event, was made possible thanks to generous financial support from Cirencester Town Council and St James’s Place and fulfilled Rotary objectives by providing Fellowship, Community and Service to others.

An ‘Activius’ Sports Bursary Scheme has been launched by the Rotary Club of Cirencester, with secured funding available to help young people enjoy sports and exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. There are many different clubs and organisation in and around Cirencester that can offer something for everyone but not every family can afford the membership fees and/equipment. That’s where the ‘Activius’ Sports Bursary Scheme comes into play. It is now open to applications via the Rotary Club website http://bit.ly/2Ow7e1H .

The scheme is now looking for additional funding via GoFundMe to support its longevity encouraging sports and exercise for young people and supporting the underprivileged.
