Our Very Own Mr “Flog It” Entertains Members
Philip Allwood gave an outstandingly entertaining after dinner talk about some of the highlights of his 20 years as Auction House Partner at Moore Allen & Innocent.
Cirencester’s very own David Dickenson, Philip Allwood (aka Paul to the President), gave an outstandingly entertaining after dinner talk about some of the highlights of his 20 years as Auction House Partner at Moore Allen & Innocent. He was accompanied by his wife, also a senior member of the MA&I Auction House team.
A Specialist in Antique & Art valuations, Philip is a real local celebrity, having appeared on local radio, national Television, include Bargain Hunt, Flog it, Antiques Road Trip, Dickenson's Real Deal, Beat The Dealers and Cash In The Attic to name a few! He is a Fellow and active member of the National Association of Valuers & Auctioneers (NAVA) and is passionate about developing talent within the profession through his lecturing.
Having grown up in the East of England, where he started his career as an auctioneer, he moved to the Cotswolds in 1999 to join MA&I to replace the retiring Antiques and Fine Arts Auctioneering partner. It was an exciting time as the company had recently set up its new edge of town Auction House in a lovely converted barn setting off the Bibury Road. Together with his wife (they come as a team, as he told us) they have successfully grown the business to be the premier Antiques and Fine Art auctioneers in our area.
With characteristic enthusiasm Philip regaled Members and guests with several stories of some the more exciting items that he has sold over the years, some fetching unexpectedly high prices on the day and others that on inspection he didn’t deem as “ordinary” as their seller thought! The best example of which was his finale which was the story of the painting from a House sale that looked to him a little less ordinary than its owner had thought and which after painstaking research was attributed at the time to being “from the school of” Rembrandt and after being sold for £2+m was confirmed by the world expert as by the great man himself… Probably the funniest story of the evening was the post sale enquiry about the whereabouts of some assorted bottles and snuff conatiners, one of which didn’t contain snuff but a relative’s ashes! Needless to say it was too late… they had been “sniffed”!
