Cirencester Signpost was set up in 2012 by Graham and Juliette Harris, originally as an outreach to those who were sleeping rough in Cirencester. It has evolved into a group of like-minded volunteers who come alongside people in the community who are in need, embracing anyone who has issues that may limit their quality of life. This can range from those who are lonely, experiencing financial hardship, bereavement, mental health problems or addictions.
The group provides regular ‘community meals’, ‘big breakfasts’, ‘good neighbour meals’ and ‘transform kids’ evening group activities. More details of all their activities can be found at www.cirencester-signpost.org.uk.
As Juliette Harris herself explained to Rotary members, “We are funded through the generosity of supporters. As we are all volunteers, we have no salaries to pay, meaning the overwhelmingly majority of our monies can be spent directly on helping people and providing our core services. This £1100 from Rotary is a huge amount of money to us and will allow us to give 106 people a day out at Weston Super Mare – for most of them, this will be their only holiday of the year and so it will be a real day to remember.”
Rotarian Bob Allison explained, “At Cirencester Rotary we are proud to raise a great deal of mony for local and international charities. When we decide where to distribute such funds, we want to make sure it goes to benefit the greatest number of people possible and in this case we are really pleased to be supporting such an excellent cause and one which does so many good things in our own community here in Cirencester.”
