Charity quiz night a great success
Cirencester Rotary Club recently staged its annual charity quiz at Stratton School Hall. This year's charity was Help Madina - a registered charity that was founded by Dr Veronica Sawicki and her husband Dr Rohit Sethi, of Phoenix Surgery in Cirencester.
The main aim of the charity is to improve the health and well-being of the people living in the Madina district of Sierra Leone. This is one of the poorest parts of the world with shocking health statistics – for example there are only 70 doctors in the country serving a population of over six million and one in four children die before their fifth birthday.
The charity’s work since 2011 has included provision of water wells, better sanitation, help for schools, eye and dental health care and establishment of medical clinics. The Rotary quiz raised a fantastic £954 on the night. This was helped by over £250 from a raffle which had some great prizes including vouchers from The Plough, Stratton House Hotel and Teatro at Ingleside.
Quiz co-organiser, Rotarian Lynn Adlington said, “The success of this quiz night owes so much to all our Club members and their friends who helped to organise the event, research and ask the questions and prepare and serve the food”.
Lynn has only recently returned from Sierra Leone, having travelled with a party of local volunteers to help in Madina. She said, “This donation will make a real difference in Sierra Leone. All money given to Help Madina goes on the life-changing projects – all the volunteers and helpers pay their own flights, accommodation and costs and there are no administrative overheads. Our Club is now actively exploring a Global Rotary grant to help fund a further significant project in Madina.”
