Professor Benington is the Chair of the Friends of Ibba Girls School, a charity dedicated to providing a high quality education to girls aged 10 to 18 years in one of the World’s poorest countries which has been devastated by decades of war.
“Our aim is to empower young women with the values, knowledge and skills to take a leading role in their communities,” said Professor Benington, “Educating a woman not only elevates her, but also uplifts her children, community and country. This school is an oasis of survival where, despite the war all around, we have not lost one day of schooling since it opened in 2014. It is a beacon of light showing what peace could look like.”
Cirencester Rotary Club has supported this charity throughout 2017 and previously donated over £1000 towards its activities. Rotarian Trevor Jones explained, “We are pleased to have presented a further £350 this evening to show our continued support for what is an excellent and brave initiative in a very difficult environment. It is an investment in young people and, through them, in the future of their country.”
