The speaker at the club's weekly meeting was Ian Dickson representing the organisation "Prostate Cancer U.K."
Ian's background is in science, having worked for many years at the Scottish Agricultural College and having latterly spent a period as an agricultural consultant in the Falkland Isles. He gave a very enlightening talk, pointing out that, somewhat alarmingly, one male in eight will develop prostate cancer at some time but softening the blow a little by conceding that many of these cases will not have a serious impact on the person's life. In a somewhat autobiographical preamble he referred to himself as having had a positive diagnosis nineteen years ago and yet leading a normal life - and, I should say, looking very fit indeed to the assembled company! Nonetheless prostate cancer is a serious condition and early diagnosis is key. There are several easily observed signs and symptoms, the presence of which might suggest a visit to the G.P. Clear information on the subject is easily accessed on the <prostatecanceruk.org> website or by 'phoning the helpline at 08000748383.
J.V.P. David Paterson asked that members once again actively publicise our am/am charity golf tournament on the 30th August at Stirling Golf Club, and that, specifically, every member approach at least two individuals or businesses who might be interested in either entering a team or sponsoring a hole, or both.
A guest at the meeting was Rotarian John Duncan, who is a past president of the Rotary Club of Buckie.
Last week's report referred to the resignation of Alan Prentice from Stirling Rotary Club. In fact it is Jim Prentice, not Alan who has tendered his resignation. We apologise for this error.
At next Friday's meeting the talk will be provided courtesy of Gordon Murphy, the visitors' host is Edmond Mansion, and the guest host is Tom Wilson.
