Rotary Club of Stirling Meeting of 7/3/14
President Martin Ross welcomed members and our special guest District Governor Jim Houston. Martin opened the business meeting with an account of his recent activities representing the club.
Secretary Jim Kerr intimated an appeal for help in funding the running of a 20K run in aid of the Elidhe Brown fund. This was approved by the meeting.
Alan Rankin announced a membership recruiting event similar to the wine tasting at the Smith last year. The proposed date is mid May.
We are again organizing the final of the national primary school quiz in May.
District Governor Jim Houston opened by saying he was pleased to return to the Golden Lion as it was here that he spent the first night of his honeymoon.. His main theme was how we should portray Rotary to non Rotarians.
As he put it, you don,t sell the sausage, you sell the sizzle. In Rotary terms don,t tell prospective members about the weekly meeting, tell them about the effect we have on our local community. New members are important as they bring new skills and new energy to the club.
In a wider context, Rotary Foundation continues to be the largest charitable organisation in the world. Importantly 98% of it,s funds are spent on projects not, administration.Polio Plus continues, having spent
$1.2 billion over the years. Polio remains a major problem in only a few areas where war or civil disorder dominate. . Grants of $6.8M to Afghanistan, $7.8M to Nigeria and $0.93M to Pakistan have recently been made in pursuit of the aim of eradicating Polio. At club level we should remember we are here for our community.
The vote of thanks was given by President Martin.
