President Frank Kelly opened our meeting by welcoming the members. There were no visitors.
PP Dr John Rankin announced that he had arranged a cruise/dinner on the Union canal for
Wednesday 11th July. Numbers are limited so express on interest as soon as possible. First come first served.
President Frank thanked all those involved in our three day exhibit at Gardening Scotland.
despite indifferent weather we exceeded last years excellent collection. Proceeds to
Alzheimer's and other Rotary charities.
Today's speaker was PP Tom Wilson who talked about Optical Machine Readable Representation of Data, Bar Codes to you and I. A commonplace in all our lives now, these were first conceived in the 1960s, arising from an idea of two Americans Woodland and Silver. They took the idea to IBM who were interested but felt the technology available at the time would not allow the code to be read reliably and cheaply. They did however employ Woodland.
An early use of the codes to keep track of railway cars proved difficult as the markers became
dirty and therefore unreadable. As well as reading the codes there were problems with
accurate printing of the bars, but the advent of Helium lasers allowed damaged codes to be read. The first item to be sold using a bar code was a pack of chewing gum. The pack and the receipt are now in the Smithsonian Museum.
The codes are issued centrally on application by the manufacturer to ensure that codes are not duplicated, rather as E Mail addresses are provided. The bar code identifies the item not the price ,which is added within the till system by the retailer allowing for changes in pack size
and special offers.
Even new born babies within Forth Valley are identified by a bar code, and Tom wondered if we would all be coded at the other end of life.
The vote of thanks was given by SVP Crawford Gordon.
