The High Sheriff of Bedfordshire visited Dunstable Rotary on Tuesday 4th March, and explained the origins of the role dated back to the 1100's. Originally the High Sheriff was the sole person in each County responsible for Law & Order, and Tax Collector!
King Henry VIII removed the tax collector role from the High Sheriffs.
Nowadays the role is more community focused but has kept Bav Shah busy every waking hour of the year!
He has attended 450 functions in the past 11 months, and with 3 weeks left in the role, predicts this will exceed 500 by the end of his year.
The role is self-funded, including uniform, travelling, parking. There is no allowance or expenses budget at all.
Bav Shah is a Rotarian, and our motto of Service Above Self shines brightly on this amazing man!
He awarded the prestigious 'High Sheriff's Commendation' to Rotary Dunstable for the contribution it makes to the community. President Alan was grateful to receive the award.
We are truly grateful for the work of The High Sheriff, and we wish him well!
