Every year the Rotary Club makes Awards to local young people for outstanding citizenship, and this year we have been delighted to make 5 Young Citizen Awards. They have all been nominated by local youth organizations for their outstanding contributions to the local community. This year, for the first time, two sisters have received Awards.
This year's winners were:
Teddy Coleman
Nominated by Tracey, leader of Shipdham Spitfires Scout Group, where he is a wolf cub, Teddy was our youngest award winner this year. He was determined to complete a mini marathon one morning earlier this year in aid of asthma and lung UK, despite only having arrived home from holiday at 2 a.m. that day. Teddy is described as being a pleasure to have in the cub group, and was the only member to come and help out at a Rotary Litter Pick in April, where he made a big impression on everybody present with his bright personality and his enthusiasm.
Naevia Hucklesby
Nominated by Ellie Brown, leader of the Watton Youth Group, Naevia is a young carer for her mother, helping with many things around the home. She is also a great friend to others in the group- always looking out for other people and being the first to support someone when they are upset.
Sway Hucklesby
Nominated by Aidan Hall, Officer in charge of the Watton Detachment of Norfolk Army Cadets, Sway overcame severe anxiety to become a model member of the cadet force. She made great progress over the next two years, showing dedication to the detachment, and helping newer cadets when they joined. Like her sister she also cares for her mother, which has caused her to miss some evenings, but these added pressures would not suppress her determination to do the best she could.
Edward Watling
Nominated by Flight Lieutenant Alex Stapleton, Officer commanding Watton Air Training Corps, Edward has been a member of the Air cadets since 2021. He has shown remarkable progress since then, having been flying and gliding and rifle shooting, first aid and many other activities. Currently working on his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, he has become an instructor cadet, teaching and instructing younger cadets, or supervising others. He has this year been promoted to Flight Sergeant and has proved a very able leader. He can be relied upon to complete any task he is set and embodies the organisation's core values of Respect, Integrity, Service Before Self and Excellence.
Ruby Shortland
Nominated by Ina Coubrough, Vice Principal of Wayland Academy, Ruby is a passionate member of the school council, and a PAL (a pupil who supports vulnerable students in school). Her work ethic is exemplary, and despite numerous extracurricular commitments she is a brilliant ambassador for Wayland. She volunteers for St John's Ambulance's Swaffham Cadet unit and has been named County Cadet for 2025 and also Regional Cadet, representing her fellow cadets throughout the year at public and St John Ambulance events. Ina tells us that an indication of the esteem in which she is held at the school is that she was nominated by 6 members of staff, so a unanimous choice!
