On a very wet summer's day, the club made a visit to the famous Bourn Windmill in Cambridgeshire, one of the oldest surviving mills in the country. Organised by David Branson, it was an excellent day out, despite the inclement weather. We stopped off at a nearby pub for lunch before driving on to the windmill, where we were given a guided tour by one of the volunteers who work so hard to maintain the windmill in tip-top condition.
The windmill is a type of mill called an 'open trestle post mill', whereby the weight of the mill is supported on a central post, which in turn is supported by a trestle. The mill can be manually turned, using a long tailpole, to ensure the sails are facing into the wind.
It was an educational and an entertaining visit, which finished with tea and cakes served to us in an ancient barn nearby.
