More than 30 years ago, with Polio endemic in many countries around the world, Rotary decided to begin a campaign to rid the world of this terrible disease.
Since that time enormous sums have been raised to fund a global immunisation programme. We are supported by the Bill Gates Foundation, who donate £2 for every £1 raised by Rotary. The result is that today polio cases have reduced by 99.9 % and the disease is endemic in just 3 countries.
It is crucial that polio is eliminated from these remaining countries and to keep other countries polio-free. If all ereadication efforts stopped today, it is reckoned that within 10 years polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year.
