President’s handover meeting

Thu, Jun 25th 2020 at 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A most unusual handover meeting was held tonight.

President Peter Cowling wore the Watton presidential chain of office at the start of tonight's Zoom meeting, but incoming President Mike Haythorpe was wearing it at the end of the meeting. How was this achieved when everybody was in their own home?Well Ivan acted as courier, and during the meeting he called around at Peter's house and collected the chain from him, then delivered it to Mike.

Although most of our activities in the second half of Peter's year had to be cancelled because of Covid 19, Peter recalled a number of highlights of his year, including our spectacular Umbrella Festival in September, and a memorable Charter dinner the following month. Peter thanked everybody for their support during a difficult year, and thought the club was in a strong position to continue our work as soon as we are able.

Duriing tonight's meeting we had an excellent presentation from Rotarian Mike Botting about the 'Carbrooke Armour' for which he himself has built a superb display cabinet. Thought to date back to the time of the English Civil War, the armour was probably intended for use by young men from the parish who were conscripted to fight. Mike reminded us that Carbrooke supported the Parliamentarians, whereas nearby Kings Lynn were Royalists. Those were clearly interesting (and dangerous) times in Norfolk.
