Many challenges await Year 6 children (aged 10-11) as they move from Primary to Secondary School. Besides bullying, both physical and online, there are many other dangers such as substance abuse, and online grooming which they need to be aware of. But where can they go for guidance on such issues?
This is where Norfolk Crucial Crew comes in. Led by Norfolk Fire and Rescue Services, Crucial Crew is a multi-agency project, engaging with year 6 students across the county delivering safety messages in a fun and informative way, through hazards presented in a safe, controlled environment. The programme involves the Fire Service working alongside partners including Norfolk Constabulary. the NHS, Road Safety, RNLI, East Anglia Air Ambulance, St Johns Ambulance, HM Coastguard among others.
In short, Crucial Crew exists to help children stay safe and learn valuable life skills. Young people are excellent communication tools for spreading safety messages, sharing them with family, friends and the wider community, which benefits everybody.
On arrival at City College, pupils are seperated into groups and move around the site visiting each partner organisation. The Rotary Club's role on the day is to ensure that all pupils move safely between the different rooms. This year, 898 children participated in the event over the course of a week, and 84 teachers. They are all now educated with Crucial Crew skills and Knowledge.
