More About Us

Our members are involved in many events through the year, both social and volunteering. Here is a bit more information about what we do.

ROTARY FELLOWSHIP

We meet on the first, third and fifth Thursdays of each month (see "What's On In The Next 30 Days" tab above), usually for a meal and to share friendship.  Most meetings we have an invited speaker and these talks cover a very wide variety of subjects ranging from Charity Work through Hobbies to Topics of General Interest.

We enhance International Understanding by regularly exchanging visits with our three Twin Clubs of Nice (Cote D'Azur),  Koblenz (Ehrenbreitstein), and Novi Sad.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

We have regular social activities organised both by the Club and groups of members.  Recent and planned ones include:

  • Quiz night in aid of Care 4 Calais
  • Boat trips on the Broads
  • Concerts in aid of Ukraine
  • Moveable Feast in aid of Parkinson's Disease
  • Visits by Twin Clubs

CHARITY and SERVICE

Supporting charities and providing service to the community are very important aspects of being a Rotarian.  Activities undertaken by the Club include:

  • Organising and operating the buggy service at the Royal Norfolk Show to assist attendees with mobility difficulties
  • Supporting young people in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) where young, non-Rotarian participants engage in leadership and team building activities in a one week residential course.
  • Assisting with the annual Wrap Up project to provide coats to people across the UK who struggle to keep warm during the winter months.
  • Collections at local supermarkets to help in response to global disasters
  • Helping at a local centre to make lunches for children in the school holidays when free school lunches are not available

MAJOR PROJECTS

Over recent years the Club has undertaken some major projects both at home and overseas.  These have included:

  • Establishing the Rotary House for the Deaf - a flagship project started in 1977 and which the Club is still involved in
  • Helping with the initial purchase and fit-out of the Cuppa Care bus.  This aims to bring people together and tackle loneliness throughout Norfolk.  It is now supported by a number of local organisations and coordinated by Hear for Norfolk.  This was our Centenary Project.
  • Working with other international organisations to establish and equip an all-inclusive School in Ghana.  This is now our largest on-going project and will be one our main focusses over the next two years.

ROTARY FOUNDATION

Rotary Foundation is Rotary International's "own charity".  It provides a mean for the 1.3 million Rotarians world wide to work together on projects of International importance.

A major drive by Foundation is to eradicate Polio worldwide - End Polio Now.  Rotary spearheaded the campaign in 1985 at a time when there were over 1,000 polio cases a day in 125 countries.  Working with International partners including the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as Rotary, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has managed to reduce cases by 99.9%.   GPEI partners still ensure that over 400 million children in 50 countries still receive their polio vaccinations every year.

This programme is of particular significance to one of our Past Presidents, Keith Tovey, as he was one of only 200 children worldwide who 52 years ago tested the original Polio vaccine.
