After living in the South-East for 9 years, I decided to make the move back to my hometown of Perth. Upon getting back and after settling into my new position, I decided that getting more involved in the local community and projects would be a good idea. The problem was I didn’t know where to start and the thought of doing anything myself seemed a bit daunting.
I knew nothing or very little of Rotary but one day I was speaking to an old member who had been doing some work for the club and on quizzing him, it happened to be for Rotary. I spoke to him about this and other things and as I sounded interested, he invited me down for a couple of lunches at the Station Hotel. Having indulged on the fine cuisine and delicacies of the Station and hearing more information I decided I would give it a whirl to see if I liked it – and I did.
I joined in 2007 and I’ve been able to vary my commitment to Rotary as my circumstances have changed which has suited me well. I’ve always tried to do something though, even just a little bit.
I’ve met a lot of nice people in the club, and some have helped guide me on both a professional and personally level which I’m grateful for. I’ll keep varying my commitments to work around other things going on (I have a 3-year-old and a busy wee business) but that’s the beauty of being involved in a much bigger movement I guess, if everyone does something (even a wee bit) it becomes far-reaching and that feels pretty good!
