My father was a member of Perth St. John’s whilst I was growing up and my sister and I were often involved in the projects that the club were doing. It was very visible to us as a family; we all got involved.
My father left Rotary before he retired because at the time (and this is no longer the case) there was a requirement to attend so many lunches in a year and it just wasn’t possible for him to do that and to run his potato merchant business. I was conscious of that and only considered joining myself after that rule had been abolished. I too have a very time-consuming business – David Lindsay Self Storage – and so understand how Rotary needs to fit in with that.
So, I joined the Rotary Club of Perth in 2007 after being approached and prompted by a member. It felt natural because of my involvement as a young person. I am an active member and enjoy my participation. I also like the way that families can and are welcomed to be involved in the projects that the Club manage, whether that be gardening, litter-picking, charity fayres and all sorts of different community activities.
Continuity of membership in families can be a great thing for the family and is quite common. Of course it has to start with someone.
