When I was self-employed, I became accustomed to being dependent on the local community, providing support and business opportunities. I felt it was my time to give back to local good causes.
I was introduced to the Rotary by a friend and was immediately drawn to the fantastic work being carried out for the community, local and international charities. I realised that I could give my time to these good causes.
I particularly loved the flexibility of the club, because I could pick and choose the ventures I wanted to help, and which suited my interests and skills. I particularly enjoy the diverse range of social activities - who knew I was so bad at pool but love a litter-pick? I could also attend the Thursday lunch as often as possible and catch up with the latest developments.
I became more involved over the years, and when I was able to pass my business to my colleague, I realised this was the right time to take a more active role. This gave me an opportunity to use my skills to benefit others.
