Perth Rotary is raising awareness of World Polio Day by participating in the “Walk a Mile for Polio” national initiative. All are welcome and we’ll meet at Bells Sports Centre on Sunday 22nd October at 11am to walk a mile on the North Inch, Perth.
Rotary International, along with the Bill Gates Foundation, has been involved in the “Global Polio Eradication Initiative” since 1979 with the first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines. By 2023 the funds raised around the world have contributed to the reduction in polio cases by 99.9%.
Today this paralysing disease remains endemic in only Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it is crucial that we continue the work of vaccination to ensure that all other countries remain polio-free. To make this happen we must continue to raise funds and support the work of the Polio Eradication Initiative.
Perth Rotary has been contributing for many years. In the last year the sum donated by our Club to the Eradicating Polio Fund was £2,000 from the surplus of the monthly bonus ball competition in which Perth Rotarians participate and an additional £3,500 going to Rotary International Annual Fund from Rotarian donations.
Rotary are not alone in supporting this initiative with PKC and other Perth organisations commemorating World Polio Day on Tuesday 24th October. Look out for the Old Perth Bridge (Smeaton’s), St. Pauls Square and St. Matthews church being lit up in purple (the brand colour of all activities supporting Polio Eradication) to support this important initiative.
If you would like to show your support you would be very welcome to join us for a Walk a Mile for Polio on Sunday 22ndOctober, 2023 at 11 am at Bells Sports Centre.
