The Rotary club of Perth held the annual Bake Off for Secondary school pupils on Tuesday 28th May in The Home Economics Room at the University of Highlands and islands Perth College. Three secondary schools took part Megan Stephens, Lucy Stoves and Jessica Smith from Perth High school, Kuba Kusiak and Rozalia Wawryzyniak from Perth St Johns and Loren Wigley and Erin Mc Intyre from Perth Academy. The pupils had been selected by their schools because of their skill in baking- some even having to go through heats that were judged by their rector. The Challenge was to bake a six portion gateaux which demonstrated the “Taste of Perthshire”. All the pupils rose to this challenge with a selection of succulent local berries including strawberries, raspberries blackberries and blackcurrants, some sourced from local farm shops. The competition was judged by Neil Mugg, chef lecturer at Perth UHI and Bill Montgomery Rotarian and Master Baker who kept a keen eye on all the pupils during the competition. The pupils were not just judged on the finished gateaux. They were assessed on their work practice and cleanliness of work station with particular regard to good hygiene. The gateaux itself was judged on flavour, balance of components and originality of design. It was also assessed on how appealing it looked and how easy it was to eat. All seven gateaux were magnificent but the judges agreed unanimously that one gateau just pipped the others. The winning gateau was baked by Loren Wigley from Perth Academy who received a £40 gift voucher. All the participants were presented with a tilting Icing cake turntable and were thanked by the judge for a great day and in making their job very difficult. Anna Martin, youth convenor Rotary club of Perth, thanked all the pupils and their teachers for supporting the event and the judges for their time and also for their help during the event. A big Thank you from all went to Perth UHI for the use of their fabulous facilities. Anna Martin thanked Ian Gibb and his team for all their help setting up the event. However the last word went to the pupils who all agreed that they had thoroughly enjoyed the day
