Speaker

Monday the 5th September March Rotary Club were given a fascinating talk on the work of The Gurkha Welfare Trust by Major Michael Thorp, a former Officer of the Brigade of Gurkhas serving with them for over 12 years in the Far East. Subsequently he has been involved with the Trust for 36 years and is the past Chairman of the East Anglian South Branch. Introduced by Rtn. George White Major Thorp told the incredible story of the Gurkha soldiers from their origins over 200 years ago. Setting the scene in Nepal, Major Thorp explained the creation of the Trust and the current work in supporting the veterans and their communities, including an update on the effects of the 2015 earthquakes and the challenges now faced. After several questions Major Thorp was thanked on behalf of the Club by President Nick Kime for his most enlightening talk and presented him with a donation of £850 to assist with the work of the Trust.
