Rotary Indian International Evening
In February some 80 people attended a special evening of Indian music, dance and food at the Masonic Centre in King’s Lynn. It was organised by Bill Irwin, Chairman of the Club International Committee and Dr Prabir Mitra in his role as a Director of the Sur Sarang Arts group. The purpose of the evening was to raise funds for a planned 3-month overland trip from England to India, in part following the old Silk Road route. The trip is to be undertaken this summer by Dr Mitra and his wife, Sanjukta, who teaches Maths at King Edward VII School. The aim is to raise awareness of diabetes, a global health problem affecting millions of people worldwide.
Traditional Indian music was provided by Saphwah Simab who plays on a rubab, a traditional string- instrument from Afghanistan, and by Amritpal Singh Rasiya on tabla drums. They also accompanied Sanjukta Mitra singing classical Indian music. Making it a truly international evening Sanjukta was also accompanied by violinist, Lin Hethrington, who also played some western folk music. In addition, Sangeeta De and dancers from her Taal Rasa Bhava Academy performed for the guests at this special evening.
