On Tuesday,14th February, 2017, our speaker was David Scraggs who is a member of the Norfolk Lowlands Search and Rescue Association. The Association was formed to give support to the Emergency Services from Hill to High Water and there are thirty four units over the country with approximately 1500 members whose ages range from 18-80 years. Each member, on average, works 150 hours per year and as a result of their existence and help, they have saved the Emergency Services something over £4m per year. David explained that the Norfolk Branch has forty seven active members and in the last year they had attended thirty one incidents, forty four exercises and sixty seven events. There are many different incidents requiring their assistance ranging from missing children, those suffering from ADHD, depression, suicidal tendencies and dementia, and experience shows the rescuers where to search, depending on the particular incident. The search team would consist of a leader, first aider, radio operator, a navigator and searchers and in the majority of cases the missing person would be found within a mile radius of the point where he was last seen. The Association is self funding and all their volunteers give of their time freely.
