The title of our  speaker’s talk on Tuesday, 23rd. August, 2016, was “Forty Years of L in Norfolk”   Our curiosity was made clear when Pat Maitland, who was before retirement a driving instructor, hence the L in Norfolk. Pat, who has a very dry wit lived in Stalham and was the son of the local doctor, who happened to be his mother.   He was educated at Stalham and he did his National Service in the early l950s.  After he completed his Service he returned to Stalham and his mother, who was one of the few people there who had a car suggested that he should learn to drive and she paid for him to have lessons through the Auto School in Norwich.   Having successfully passed his test he was persuaded to set up as a driving instructor.  Pat’s first car was an A30 and he worked as a Ministry Qualified Instructor for Mann Edgerton   in Norwich, before setting up as a Driving School in his home town of Stalham.  He was able to recall many amusing incidents and for twenty minutes kept us entertained with stories of many of his former pupils and made us realise just how much patience and courage was needed to be successful in his chosen career   Rtn. Peter Burman thanked Pat for his very amusing presentation. The picture shown Pat with President Diana Loveland and Rtn.Henry Dent
