At our meeting on the 15th December, 2015, Rosa Russell, who is a member of the Soroptomist’s Great Yarmouth Club, came as a guest of Rotarian Diana Loveland, and spoke to us, with the aid of a power point presentation, about a Charity formed in Great Yarmouth and supported by her Club and called “Neat Feet Health Trust” or more informally as “Neat Feet Happy Hands”.   That Trust was the brainchild of Ali Thane, a nursing sister at the James Paget Hospital, who, when on holiday in the Kwale region of Kenya, saw extreme deformity in legs and arms which was a sign of poverty and neglect.    The disfiguring is caused by the Jigger Parasite which is a small grub living in the sand and which affects the feet.    The children generally go about barefooted and there are approximately 1.5 million children not able to attend school because of damage to their feet.    Through her medical knowledge Ali decided that treatment was urgently needed and she began a course of antiseptic to hopefully kill the germs which had badly penetrated both hands and feet of those affected.   The treatment  consisted of sealing the feet with petroleum jelly and soaking with potassium permanganate and after treatment the children were provided with crocs to wear.    The cost of the treatment is relatively small by our standards and Rosa pointed out that a donation of only ten pounds would pay for the medication for approximately one hundred children and see them back to school.   Rotarian Diana Loveland thanked Rosa for her informative and moving talk.
