On Tuesday last week our speaker was Diana Staines from Centre 81 who gave a presentation of the Centre’s activities. The Centre was formed in 1981 (hence its name) and was set up to give assistance to disabled people who, at that time, had nowhere to go and the idea was to create a Social Club. They acquired premises on Rampart Road and their first customers took part in the various social and leisure activities provided. Their popularity grew and in 1984 Centre 81 became a registered charity and moved to their present premises on Tar Works Road. After a MUB appeal (Make us Mobile) the Centre changed from a Day Centre to a People’s Activity Centre and the staff have been able to help many disadvantaged people achieve their dreams. The mini buses acquired by the Centre, and which are fully equipped for disabled access, have enabled them to create a door to door service for members of the public as well as providing transport for trips to the theatre etc for its members. Membership of the Centre is open to anyone over the age of eighteen and currently their youngest member is 23 and the oldest 86. The thoughts of our members were echoed by Rtn. Tom Pearce when he thanked the speaker for her very interesting and informative talk.
