Alan Morris who spoke to us about the last invasion of Britain.

In 1794 France and Britain were at war and in 1796 the French created a large armada with the intention of landing in Ireland and then to the west of Britain. The Invasion began in Fishguard, South Wales on the 22nd February, 1797

At our meeting on Tuesday of last week we were given a history lesson by Alan Morris who spoke to us about the last invasion of Britain.   He began by mentioning early invasions by Julius Ceasar, the Emperor Claudius and William Duke of Normandy, but the invasion the subject of his talk was in the early eighteenth century by King William when George IV was on the throne and William Pitt the younger was the Prime Minister.   By 1794 France and Britain were at war and in 1796 the French created a large armada with the intention of landing in Ireland and then to the west of Britain.   Bad weather prevailed and the French returned home.    They were however intent on an invasion and later, on the 22nd February 1797, four ships were spotted off St. Davids.   They were French ships but were flying British flags.   They proceeded to Fishguard and came ashore during the afternoon after climbing the 200ft cliffs.   They wore British uniforms and altogether 1400 men made their way to the Royal Oak Inn which became their H.Q.   After fierce fighting, in due course, they surrendered on  condition that the French Army would be sent back to France at England’s expense.   These terms were unacceptable and, following an unconditional surrender the officers were sent to London and the other ranks were imprisoned at the Golden Prison in Pembroke.   Details of the battle were committed to a tapestry some thirty meters long, which is displayed in St. Mary’s Church Fishguard.    Rotarian George Cooper thanked Alan for his very interesting and informative talk
