Treekly is an international charity that plants a tree in a deforested area of the world every time one of its subscribers walks 5000 or more steps in a day. The Rotary Cambridge Treekly group has walked 385 million steps and sponsored the planting of over 13,700 trees as at March 2025, more than any other group in Rotary Great Britain & Ireland. One of our members has walked nearly 400,000 steps, the 3rd largest number by a Rotarian anywhere in the world, and planted nearly 1700 trees.
When we started with Treekly they were extending mangrove swamps in Madagascar, where 90% of the primary forests have been destroyed. Mangroves are better at trapping CO2 than rainforests, protect against coastal erosion and tsunamis and improve wildlife habitats and water quality. The project was giving fair wage employment to local people who plant and protect the trees.
More recently our contributions have gone towards tree planting in Kenyan mangroves, where the problems and solutions are similar.
Treekly also operates in Indonesia, Mozambique, Brazil and Haiti, all areas that have been subject to intense deforestation and degradation of the environment. Click here to learn more
