The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on residents of the townships in and around Cape Town. Government support is very modest and unemployment has risen well beyond the usual 30% rate.
Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club have supported Literacy and Numeracy programmes in 20 schools in their area for a long time. During the pandemic it has also been very active in providing support for people in the townships in their area, including running food banks and soup kitchens and providing blankets for families and night shelters.
Chris van der Leij, their Community Services Chairman, is currently leading their efforts. He is a certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming Master and Trainer. He left the corporate world in 2004 and combines his skills as a motivational speaker and sales and management trainer with working in a number of townships around Somerset West. He is the co-founder of a Non-Profit Organisation that focuses on two pillars: providing food to unemployed people while uplifting the minds of the hopeless. He works with schools, teachers and students alike, in order to direct their mind power to believing in and getting the best out of themselves.
