This week our guest at Baldock Rotary was Jeanette Farrow who is Director of Caring Herts CIC, which exists to support older members of the North Hertfordshire and Stevenage communities who are experiencing loneliness or social isolation, giving them confidence to live well and enjoy life to the fullest.
Jeanette explained that the effects of social isolation and loneliness in people of all ages can be as detrimental to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and, with around 200,000 older people in the UK not having had a conversation with a friend or relative in more than a month, she and her organisation want to raise awareness and help people to reconnect with their community.
The original Compassionate Neighbours Wellbeing Hubs had operated for around 8 years as a branch of another organisation but folded last year under a policy of financial cutbacks, so Jeanette took the courageous decision early this year to found and register Caring Hearts CIC in February.
The demand for such help and care was very apparent and Caring Herts CIC currently run 15 Wellbeing Hubs a week, consisting of seated exercise activities and offering companionship, advice, a listening ear and, most importantly, a sense of enjoyment. There is also a Healthy Memory Café, designed for those with dementia and a loved one/carer to attend together. Funding is tight so, at present, a small charge has to be made for those attending.
Jeanette hopes to open another Wellbeing hub, this time in Baldock, so Baldock Rotary will try to help her with finding an appropriate venue and will be making a significant donation to Caring Herts CIC.
Jeanette, your talk was inspiring and we, in Baldock Rotary, applaud your initiative and wish you every success with such an important humanitarian service. Thank you for your visit to us.
