Funded by The Rotary Club of Rushden, the nationally recognised Prison? Me? No Way! (PMNW) programme delivered an exceptionally impactful learning experience for Year 9 students in Rushden early in March, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from educators, councillors, and community volunteers.
Designed for young people aged 13–14, the PMNW initiative provides vital education on the consequences of criminal behaviour, including involvement in County Lines activity, drug use, knife crime, and joint enterprise. Through a combination of lived-experience presentations, interactive workshops, and realistic demonstrations, the programme offers students a compelling insight into how everyday decisions can shape their futures.
Exceptional Engagement from Students
Observers noted the strong engagement and mature behaviour shown by participating students throughout the day. In one session, nearly a hundred students listened in complete silence as a speaker shared their personal story of becoming involved in crime. Teachers accompanying the groups reported that students remained focused, respectful and inquisitive, particularly during the mock magistrates’ court activities.
Real Stories with Lasting Impact
One of the most powerful elements of the day came from speakers who had direct experience of the criminal justice system. A former prisoner explained how easily young people can become implicated in serious offences simply through association, leaving a lasting impression on the groups attending. A former prison officer also highlighted how young people can be drawn into drug transportation through manipulation and escalating debt, demonstrating the dangers of exploitation.
Students responded strongly to the realistic prison cell mock-up and prison clothing display, which provided a stark visual representation of the loss of freedom and privacy that comes with imprisonment.
Expert Knowledge Supporting Local Learning
Specialist presenters with strong local knowledge led sessions on drugs, criminal exploitation and personal safety. Their clear, factual delivery reinforced key safeguarding and PSHE themes taught within schools, helping students better understand the risks they may encounter in their wider community.
Praise from Community Leaders
Rushden Town Councillor Carol Childs, who attended the programme, praised the event as “absolutely brilliant” and highlighted the importance of delivering such education to Year 9 students as they navigate increasing independence. She commended the PMNW team for presenting hard-hitting topics in a way that was firm, honest and non-intimidating, allowing students to engage confidently and ask meaningful questions.
A Valuable Partnership for the Town
The Rotary Club of Rushden once again funded the programme, enabling local students to benefit from this important community safeguarding initiative. Feedback from staff and visitors consistently highlighted the programme’s effectiveness in helping young people recognise the long-term consequences of their decisions and avoid potentially life-changing mistakes.
Commitment to Youth Safety and Education
This year’s PMNW event reinforces the value of collaborative efforts between schools, community organisations and experienced professionals. By giving students a realistic and relatable understanding of crime and its consequences, the programme continues to play a crucial role in safeguarding young people and supporting positive futures in Rushden.
