The weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy was held at the Dean Park Hotel on Tuesday 31st October. The meeting was attended by 24 Members 2 visiting Rotarians, and 4 guests.

SVP Robert Main was standing in for President Dallas and presidents business included mention of the recent District conference that had been attended by President Dallas, PP Iain Gow and PP Ann Mitchell.

Kirkcaldy was awarded a Silver Gilt at the recent Britain in Bloom awards, part of the judging was based on community involvement which included the Rotary projects at the station and Laws Close.

Zahid gave a brief summary on the Race Night which had raised £2800, Robert thanked Zahid for all the work he had put into the event.

Secretary’s announcements: A few members had visited the St. Andrews Club last week, next week’s meeting will be a Club Affairs Meeting with updates from the Chairs.

The speaker was Lt Col (Retd) Graham Meacher MBE and the topic was the Armed Forces Charity ssafa. Graham is the Chairman of the Fife Branch of ssafa and he pointed out that while ssafa is a national charity all proceeds raised in Fife stay in Fife. Of the 2500 Service related charities ssafa is one of the oldest being founded in 1885. The services offered by ssafa are numerous and diverse ranging from helping veterans in financial difficulty to assisting with adoption procedures. The charity has over 6000 volunteers and supports all three services. Following the talk SVP Robert Main presented Graham with a donation cheque from the Kirkcaldy Rotary Club, Graham expressed his thanks and mentioned that while they are very reliant on volunteers it still costs £15,000 to run the Branch each year.

PP Les Soper gave the vote of thanks and recounted a story of how an ex serviceman on the streets of Kirkcaldy was introduced to ssafa, it transpired that he was entitled to certain benefits some of which he had paid into and was unaware of, this assistance and advice helped him get back on his feet.
