Book Donation to school's reading scheme

The reading programme at Wollescote Primary School has received a boost through a further donation from the Rotary Club of Stourbridge. As part of its monthly ‘100 Centenary Challenge’ the club’s members have donated the books to supplement resources used to assist with the school’s teaching of reading programmes for children and family members.
The school serves an area of noted deprivation, where over 80% of the children speak English as a second language. Often families have limited spoken English skills and parents perhaps have no ability to write in English. A series of sacks, which contain books and a range of artefacts associated with the storyline, enable language skills to be developed more speedily and more effectively through the association of objects and words. As with any aspect of learning, variety helps to create interest and appeal, so the additions to the range of books is a valuable addition to the school’s resources.
Rotary Club Past President Chris Fonteyn, who is also the school’s Chairman of Governors, is pictured with Mrs Lynne Hudson, Head teacher, with some of the books given to the scheme.
Later
this month, pupils from the school, assisted by Stourbridge Rotarians, will be
planting trees as part of their response to the awareness of climate concerns
and in recognition of the Queen’s Green Canopy project as part of Her Majesty’s
Platinum Jubilee.

Following a visit by Club members to the headquarters of Aquabox the Club has made a donation of £300 to support the work of this charity in supplying clean water to those in great need.
